Pride of Northumbria: a new Social Enterprise

Derelict Co-op department store Revitalised shop units

In 2007 Amble Development Trust purchased the old Co-op Department store building in Queen Street after several years of it lying vacant. £350,000 to buy the building came from One NorthEast and NSP, additional funding was secured through Northumberland County Council and English Heritage to complete work to the shop front, and internal work was funded by a grant through RDPE (Rural Development Programme for England).

The building was divided into three units. The Development Trust retained one, to rehouse social enterprise Fourways Foods. Customers to the Pride of Northumbria store on Queen Street can now watch jams and preserves being made, as well as purchasing delicious local produce, whilst browsing crafts made by local artists.

Above left, the building was officially opened in Ocober 2011 by Doug Paterson of Amble's DP Builders who won the contracts for both phases of the refurbishment. From left to right: Ewan Paterson, Florence Angus, Andy Sim, Julia Aston, and Doug Paterson
